The LEED certification system

The LEED certification system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was founded in the United States in 1993 by the USGBC (US Green Building Council), a non-profit organisation that spreads the standard for sustainable construction worldwide. In 2008, the GBC Italy (Green Building Council Italy) was founded to transpose pertinent international and European legislation and promote the use of LEED standards throughout the country. These standards assess the sustainability of buildings through a series of parameters that lead to the attribution of a building rating and its certification as a low-environmental impact construction. The certification system contemplates the evaluation of the building according to seven sustainability fields: site sustainability (SS), efficient water management (GA), energy and atmosphere (EA), materials and resources (MR), internal environmental quality (IQ), project innovation (IP) and regional priority (PR). The rating scale has a maximum score of 110, though a minimum score of 40 is required for basic certification. Certification types:

Base (40-49 points)
Silver (50-59 points)
Gold (60-79 points)
Platinum (at least 80 points).
